K-Beauty (from Korean Beauty) is the term that encompasses the skincare practices, products, and philosophy originating from South Korea. More than just a line of cosmetics, it's a lifestyle centered on prevention, hydration, and respect for the skin.
Unlike traditional Western cosmetics — which often act reactively by correcting existing problems — K-Beauty adopts a preventative and holistic approach: nourishing the skin before problems appear.
The key concept: In South Korea, skin care is not vanity — it's self-care.
The K-Beauty phenomenon began to spread globally around 2011, driven by the Hallyu and the world's fascination with the radiant look — known as glass skin — that characterizes Korean people.
Origin and history of Korean beauty
Skincare in Korea has roots that go back more than 1,000 years. In the Joseon Dynasty (14th–19th centuries), women already prepared creams and tonics with natural ingredients such as ginseng, fermented rice, and chrysanthemum.
In the second half of the 20th century, the Korean cosmetic industry experienced an explosion of innovation. Brands like Sulwhasoo, The Face Shop, and Innisfree began successfully exporting their formulas to the world.
It was in the 2010s when K-Beauty became a global trend. Social media and the rise of specialized stores allowed millions of people in Europe and Latin America to discover essences, sheet masks, and BB Creams of Korean origin.
The 3 pillars of K-Beauty
The entire philosophy of K-Beauty rests on three fundamental principles that differentiate it from any other cosmetic trend:
Intense hydration
Hydration is the central axis. Well-hydrated skin protects itself better and looks healthier.
Natural ingredients
K-Beauty opts for naturally derived or biotechnological ingredients with scientific backing.
Consistency and ritual
Skincare is a daily practice. A moment of connection with yourself, not an obligation.
These three pillars explain why K-Beauty is a philosophy of life: revealing the best version of your skin.
